Type 1 Diabetes:

St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research (SVI)

Supporting Dr Michelle So’s Rising Stars Fellowship.

Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys its own insulin-producing cells. Treatment for the condition is currently managed by replacing the insulin that the body can no longer produce through injections and pumps administered by the individual multiple times per day. This has been how the disease has been treated since the discovery of insulin a century ago. There is no cure, only management for the disease.

Dr Michelle So, the beneficiary of the Djinda Foundation’s Rising Star Fellowship, along with a team of researchers at SVI, is investigating a potential new treatment for Type 1 Diabetes that could challenge insulin’s dominant role in the treatment of this disease. These researchers recently analysed the results of a clinical trial they completed.

In the trial, a drug called baricitinib was tested, which is already approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, for its ability to protect the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas from immune system attack. The findings and successful research were published in the New England Journal of Medicine in December 2023. Once it has been approved by regulators, this will be the first disease-modifying treatment for Type 1 Diabetes that can be delivered as a tablet. The intention is for this drug to be used in patients early in the disease process to protect insulin-producing cells so that they can continue to produce insulin. Dr So used her experience as a clinician-researcher to help interpret the results of the drug treatment in the trial participants.

Fondation Idée Sport

Coaching Programme

Throughout Switzerland, there are spaces and structures that are ideal for practicing sport and promoting movement. These places are easily accessible and free of charge. Idée Sport is an organisation offering low-threshold, non-performance-oriented services to promote movement and encounters between all children and young people in Switzerland.

Identification and professionalism are central to their work. Idée Sport makes this possible by placing particular emphasis on the personal development of its employees.

Djinda Foundation contributes to supporting Idée Sport in their coaching programme which facilitates their work in enabling over 2,000 young adults and adolescents to get involved as coaches in gyms and organise events for their beneficiaries. Trainers are engaged with young people to give them the necessary tools for smooth execution of their work such as health promotion through movement, personal development, professionalism, being solution-oriented, encouraging team spirit, accountability and learning management principles.
